Trekking To Poonhill
The area of this trek which falls in the sublime & highly captivating region of the Annapurna is ideal to be done with loved ones, close colleagues & like minded people who have a special passion for the wild…
This is a famous trek route that can be done teahouse & camping style as we witness the awesome natural beauty of a region that literally stirs the emotions to the core. The trek can be done in a week but this doesn’t deprive you of the hidden treasures of Nepalese culture displayed in the laps of some of the most stunning landscapes on earth. We camp & hike amidst rhododendron forests & alpine trees that give us that nostalgic feeling of yuletide at home…its an ideal outing if you are cramped on time but yet want to see some of the highest mountains on earth within the little time you have as you hike a well trodden path even used by royalty up to an elevation of 3210m with lovely hamlets & green glens amidst colorful, whitewashed villages brimming with life & cultures & traditions that are as old as the hamlets they live in.
We plod through areas that are home to the renowned ‘Gurkha warriors’’ that include members from the Gurung & Magar ethnic communities who inhabit this region. Our walks go through oak forests full of chirping birds who chatter in warm welcome the moment you enter its realm which is their home. The forests overlap into green hills with green-patched valleys & as you walk the trails, from every angle you tend to look through, your eyes behold the glittering silver grey peaks of Mt. Machhapuchre {or fishtail at 6993m} Annapurna at 8091m & the Dhaulagiri at 8167m is only but the tip of the iceberg; as we move on course to our excursion of the famous vantage point of Poonhill we get to view a fantastic sunset that displays a myriad of colors in red, pink & maroon shades that splash across the twilight skies as the sun dips behind the mountains, leaving us dumbstruck to the bones in admiration of the powers to be in God’s wonderful creations…repeated again at the break of dawn when the sun rises again from behind the mountains in a myriad of different colors that are red & gold, heralding in a new day in the gift of life that we witness in this region ever so rich in landscapes. From Poonhill we get to view a whole range of famous peaks that are spread out for us as far as the eyes can see beyond the horizons of the sunset we just witnessed.
This trek presents any & everything for those who love nature in all its diverse forms; as diverse as the lifestyles of the local folks that we see in the mid-hills of this region. As we come down from Poonhill the trails lead us across ever changing landscapes of flowing rice fields, forests swirling in mist & lowland villages close to the glacier basin of the Annapurna Sanctuary formed by the peaks of Machhapuchre, Hiunchuli & Manaslu.
Once up-on-a-time this trek was said to be very complicated due to accessibility, food & lodges, today, it has become a virtual paradise for lovers of nature & a virtual junction with a host of facilities for trekkers heading from Ghandrung to Base camp; Annapurna Base Camp can be reached through three different routes from this area. The Poonhill trek is just but one option to some of the biggest expeditions on earth that begin from right here…
